Neelima Talande, a volunteer, poses for a photograph at her village Khairgaon Deshmukh. 23-year-old Neelima has been with the child protection programme since UNICEF began its project in Yavatmal in 2010.
Volunteers like Neelima hold meetings for adolescent girls in their villages. There they give them information about child rights, child marriage, education, health and hygiene. Through their work the volunteers ensure that children who were skipping school often due to financial constraints attend regularly.
UNICEF organises training workshops for village volunteers in all blocks in the three districts of Jalna, Wardha and Yavatmal on a regular basis. These workshops are residential and usually span three to five days.
